Rough Draft: Jordan Davis

JefeGotItKnockin

In 2003, at the age of eight, Jordan Davis was introduced to the production side of the music industry through his cousin, who has started two labels: Glacier City Ent and White Nation Ent. Jordan observed his interactions with Fake Shore Drive and how he managed his artists, and developed an appreciation for the production side of the music industry. Inspired by artists such as Michael Jackson and Prince and producers such as Pi’erre Bourne and Cardo. Raised by his paternal grandmothers in Evanston, Illinois, and faced with the tragic loss of his father on his thirteenth birthday, Jordan persevered, and continued working towards his goal of becoming a producer known across the world.

Currently, Jordan is apart of a group known as Tiny Chain Gang and alternatively as Time Capsule Garden, whose members are: WillisChillin, Josh Grant, Vantablac Sol, DJ Hool, Rizzi Konway, Rebel Legato, and JefeGotItKnockin, which is Jordan’s stage name. Along with members Josh Grant and DJ Hool, Jordan produces beats for the group and provides the backbone for their raps. Though Hip-Hop is the genre his beats derive most of their identity from, they are also influenced by R&B, Soul, and Trap as well. He incorporates sounds and samples songs from his childhood with ones he’s picked up along his journey as a producer, and puts them together to create beats that are precise while simultaneously youthful. For Jordan, every beat is a chance to improve his craft, and rough drafts are integral to this mindset. Typically, he begins with a sample of a song or melody he likes, and from there builds upon his beats using different acoustics. No matter the genre, Jordan delivers quality sounds every time, even if he considers a beat to be flawed. When collaborating with an artist, he prefers to fine tune his beats along with the artists interested in using them rather than simply ship them off to never be heard from again.

Jordan’s favorite project is an unreleased mixtape featuring members of Tiny Chain Gang, and most of his focus has been geared towards the group’s collective efforts relating to it. From an Artist and Repertoire standpoint, one challenge Jordan has had is finding artists who are as dedicated to achieving greatness as he is. From the standpoint of a producer, finding a placement has been his biggest challenge. Not only is saturation a problem, but a lack of resources as well. In a time where sixteen year olds can get major deals from labels and companies from beats posted on Youtube, it can be daunting for those who put their heart and soul into the production side of music. However, Jordan remains undeterred and hopeful in the face of this reality, and has continued using his network to market and showcase his skills. In five years, he hopes to be financially stable, living in L.A.,and representing an artist as serious as himself. Though humble, his aspirations are commendable at the same time because they demonstrate that he is unwilling to take the easy way out regarding reaching his goals.

The pandemic hasn’t stopped him either. He’s used the time to continue creating his beats and improving his social presence. His positive outlook likely stems from the support he received from his friends and family after the unfortunate death of his father, but even more so from his own personal strength. Jordan Davis is truly the steadfast hard worker whose love of his craft motivates him to be better than all who came before him.
